State Of Play, starting Jan 7th,  is a brand new Thursday evening music magazine programme bringing together the best in music with discussion that promises to be insightful, witty and unpredictable. Hosted by Phil Udell, the show will be a weekly hour long exploration of not only the latest releases but also musical history, the latest news and random topics and themes!

Each week, Phil will be joined by two guests - one taken from a group of regular contributers that includes John Joe Worrall, Jennifer Gannon and Niall Byrne (Nialler9), the other from the music world at large - be it artists or industry and media figures. Together, they will debate three of the week's new album releases as well as the latest developments, trends, news or whatever takes their fancy. The monthly 'Play & Tell' feature will see a guest (or Phil!) introducing us to a gem from their own record collection, be it a long lost classic or a personal gem. Audience interaction will form a large part of the programme so do get in touch text 51051, email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The best decade of Irish music? You decide...

Given that St Patrick’s Day is nearly upon us, this week on the show we’ll be running a special debate to decide what was the best decade for Irish music; 70s. 80s, 90s or 00s. Four guests – JP O’Malley from State.ie, agent Vinny Ryan, Jamie Fox from Fight Like Apes and Take The Money And Run’s Neil Dooley – will be in to make an impassioned plea for their chosen era. Phantom listeners will get the chance to vote by clicking your decade of choice in the box just to your right there...

Will it be this?

Or this?

Maybe this?

Or even this?

We can argue all we want (ie a lot) but the outcome is up to you. Get voting now...

Welcome To The Jungle...

After Johnnie Craig's sterling work in the chair last week (although we're not too sure about his Queen comments), Phil returns for your weekly dose of musical conversation. This week he'll be joined by regular John Joe Worrall and special guest Angela Dorgan of First Music Contact, responsible for Hard Working Class Heroes and the Irish showcases at SxSW amongst other events.

Review wise they'll be looking at new albums from The Cast Of Cheers, Humanzi and Frightened Rabbit.

Elsewhere we'll be asking Angela just how difficult it is for Irish bands to make it overseas and giving our thoughts on the line-up for Oxegen 2010.

Finally, we want to compile a list of the definitive album opening tracks - send yours to 51052, email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or tweet @phantom1052. There's a lot of love for this already....

See you this Thursday at 7pm....

Here's Johnnie....

Johnnie Craig is your host tonight as State Of Play celebrates its sparkling new teaming up with the lovely people at Tower Records. This week he'll be joined by regular opinion provider Jennifer Gannon and Gav from Super Extra Bonus Party.

Albums up for debate this week are the highly anticipated debut from Bangor's Two Door Cinema Club, the return of Fun Lovin Criminals and the latest from The Kissaway Trail.

In the second half of the show Johnnie will be delving into the murky world of the guitar solo. A genuine art form or a necessary evil in music? Let him know. This might help your decision...

Plus and in the light of the ongoing Peter Kay / Liam Gallagher spat he'll be recalling the great rock star put downs from history.

That's tonight at 7pm. Be part of it - text 51052, email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and tweet @phantom1052.

Diamonds, Cash and the return of Gabriel

Another week, another hour's music conversation on your radio. Joining me this week are Phantom's own Johnnie Craig and singer / musician Carol Keogh. Together we'll be assessing the hotly tipped debut from Marina & The Diamonds, the final - we assume - album from Johnny Cash and Peter Gabriel's bizarre covers experiment.

Given Carol's musical history, we thought there was no-one better to comment on the art of the collaboration. Expect to hear this mentioned....

Plus, we want to hear about your music related injuries - the more bizarre the better. Text 51052 or email us This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Speak to you later...

Things We Learnt This Week

That the Massive Attack is either very good (Phil) or awesome (John Joe Worrall - but then again he was delirious with a cold).

That And So I Watch You From Afar are more Phil's thing but that they need to have a slight rethink before they make another record.

That the Yeasayer record sounds like Howard Jones. And yes that is a good thing.

That bands wanting to be considered for the IMRO showcase your 2010 should send their myspace or web links to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by this Friday.

That the singles chart is, we're afraid, pretty much dead. Also, who the hell are Owl City?

That EMI could do with the lend of a few quid. Around about a billion. Anyone fancy doing a whip round?

More where that came from this Thursday at 7pm.
